My heartfelt moment happened with a child outside of the Roots of Empathy session. I was in a mentor meeting with a boy who was doing Roots of Empathy. He has some anger and aggression issues. He had been involved in an incident in the school yard and had kicked and hit another student, so we were chatting about what happened in our meeting. I asked him ‘How did you feel when this happened?’ and ‘How do you think the other student felt?’ to which I just got shrugs and ‘I dunno’ as a reply. I then asked him ‘How would you feel if someone hit or kicked Baby Cora?’. I could see he was thinking about it, so after a pause I gently asked him again. This time he replied ‘I’d feel sad’. We chatted a little about how it would be sad if Baby Cora was hurt, and how upset she would be. This was a turning point for this student. Since then he has taken a real interest in Baby Cora during our family visits and he is not as violent as before.
