During one Roots of Empathy lesson, we talked about understanding how others feel. I asked the students, “Is it easier to understand a baby’s emotions or a third grader’s emotions?” and most of the class said they believed third graders were easier to understand how they feel. One student who doesn’t usually engage in our ROE circle and stands back during conversation raised her hand. She said, “I don’t agree that third graders are easier to understand emotions, because sometimes I look mad, but I am actually sad.” I thought this was a heartfelt moment because this student got an opportunity to let her classmates into what is happening in her heart.
