Our Northern Ireland story
As a result of an invitation from the Public Health Agency to our Founder/President, Mary Gordon, to deliver a keynote address, we launched programmes in Northern Ireland in 2010-11 and have reached over 20,500 children to date. The Founder travelled to each of the five Trust areas and spoke resulting in all Trusts of the Public Health Agency supporting Roots of Empathy.
“These findings are consistent with those of other evaluations of ROE and suggest that it is an effective and cost-effective programme that can be delivered appropriately and effectively in regions such as Northern Ireland.
The study also found that ROE as likely to be a cost-effective use of society’s resources as a means of improving children’s quality of life.”
Roots of Empathy welcomes new Instructors at these 2019 trainings.
From our 2018 Annual Programme Evaluation Report
- 97% of participating students in Northern Ireland reported that if they saw a friend being bullied or treated meanly, they would help them
- 98% of teachers in Northern Ireland with Roots of Empathy in their classrooms strongly agreed or agreed that as a result of the program, pupils are more able to understand other people’s points of view
- 95% of teachers strongly agreed or agreed that as a result of Roots of Empathy,
pupils are more inclusive or accepting of others who are different from themselves
(including culture, race, special needs, gender, etc…)
“The children are much more tolerant, gentle and patient. They consider themselves role models for the baby and what if the baby knew they did x, y and z!! They are thinking about their actions and how they impact others – if only the rest of the world did the same, it would be a wonderful place to grow up in!” – Primary 2 teacher, Kinawley
What can Roots of Empathy teach the world? “Everybody can feel the same feelings no matter what different background you are from.” – Primary 5 pupil, Holywood
